Slovenian bollards look almost identical to Austria. Similar models appear occasionally in Montenegro, so check additional clues.
Former Yugoslav countries use orange pencil-shaped tourist signs. Slovenia, however, is the country where you most often see tiny white route markers with the number printed on them; Croatia and Serbia have them but less frequently.
If “ZONE” is written as CONA you are in Slovenia. The backs of signs are usually not black (unlike Italy) and often carry a yellow sticker.
Unlike neighbouring Croatia and Hungary, the pedestrian crossing sign has no belt or sash. From left to right: Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary.
Slovenia was the most industrialised part of Yugoslavia and still has the highest GDP per capita in the region (approx. USD 30k vs. Serbia’s 7.4k)(References Place Explorer). Many neighbouring countries share similar chevron colours, but newer housing and vehicles favour Slovenia(References Map of European Road Curve Chevron Signs). Note that Austria uses chevrons with a coloured background.
If you see a yellow sticker on the back of a sign, it is probably Slovenia rather than Austria.
Window planters brimming with flowers are a recurring theme.
Narrow down state/region
- Different regions incorporate neighbouring cultures—traditional house styles vary(References Traditional houses in Slovenia)
- Karst landscapes stretch from south-western Slovenia into Italy
- If you lack mountains in every direction you are probably on the eastern plains
