Hedgerows — planted borders of shrubs and other low vegetation — line roadsides and surround houses. Some date back before the 19th century, and some are left unmaintained.

Chevron signs are white on a black background. No country other than the UK uses black-and-white chevrons in the cold North Sea region.

The UK and Ireland have a lot of cat's eyes (raised road reflectors) on their roads. They're also used in places like New Zealand, but rarely elsewhere in Europe.

If you see lots of brick houses, think UK.

England is generally flat, with farmland spreading around the Wash.

Outside urban areas, Scotland shows rocky terrain and pastoral farming. Scottish Gaelic can also appear.

Wales was formerly an industrial region, and agriculture isn't very prominent there.

Arable farmland spreads across the southeast to east, with many large, open wheat and rapeseed fields. The rainy western and northern hills have many small enclosed pastures.

Treeless, rolling hills covered edge-to-edge in low, brownish grass-like plants (heath, heather) mean moorland. Found in the Scottish Highlands, the Pennines, Dartmoor, the Welsh uplands, and elsewhere.

If field boundaries are gray stone walls stacked without mortar rather than hedgerows, that points to the northern or western uplands. The flatter southeast has more hedgerows.

The leading digit of a road number tells you the region.

Welsh-language signs are easy to spot — the spelling isn't pronounceable in English. Look for wording like "ARAF" or "SAFLE BWS."

Red-and-white bollards are common in mainland Scotland.

"Passing place" signs are common across all of Scotland, including the Shetland Islands.

The Isle of Wight, off the south coast, is a roughly diamond-shaped tourist island. A cycle route runs around its perimeter.
