How to Distinguish
- Located at the northern tip of the United Kingdom
- Drives on the left
- Shares most features with mainland Britain, but hedgerows are almost entirely absent
- Cloudy days are common—even Street View is often overcast(References Shetland Islands – Climate)
- Native trees barely grow except on cliffs or the outer isles
Signs you can find
Trees—even shrubs—are scarce. Like the rest of Scotland you will find “passing place” signs. If the landscape feels very rocky, it might actually be mainland Scotlandas in this example.
Cattle grids—metal bars laid across the road—are frequent(References Cattle grid). They keep sheep and cattle from wandering out of the grazing area. You will see them in many pastoral regions, but Shetland has a particularly high density.
Look out for Shetland sheep(References Shetland sheep).
