Sign posts are often black-and-white striped.

Black-and-white blocks appear along waterways and intersections. The type of bollard shown in the photo is also common.

In some spots you can spot a blue-white-red Google Car.

Utility poles come with either large drilled holes or a square shape like Thailand's. The coils on the poles are also quite large.

If a shop's sign or a phone-number listing shows only Tamil or only Sinhala rather than both, that may point to a region where that language dominates. In practice, Tamil-only examples cluster in the far north, and Sinhala-only ones in the far south.

Rice paddies are most common in the north-central region (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa), in Ampara in the east, and in Hambantota in the south, and sparse in the southwest — though since paddies exist nationwide, treat this only as a rough guide.

Coconut palms themselves are scattered nationwide, but commercial production is heaviest on the western coast centred on Kurunegala in the west-central region (the "coconut triangle").

Tea plantations are common from the southern central highlands through to the southwest tip. Rubber follows a similar distribution, but isn't found high in the mountains and is more common in the southwestern lowlands.
