Over 80% of residents are Indigenous Greenlanders and the official language is Greenlandic. In areas with permafrost, the ground subsides in summer as the ice melts and then heaves again when it refreezes in winter. To avoid that movement, many houses stand on rock or stilts; you might see space beneath the floor or concrete supports. The cold climate also means roads are often far from perfectly level.

Flags may appear on boats, though some vessels carry different flags or none at all, so pay attention.
